The reason I wanted to become a lawyer are the underlying values of the law. The law can and should play a much greater role in tackling serious human rights violations. But the law is not just a checklist of rules. We need to speak out about the values underlying the norms and act on them.

Securing justice is not a matter of the passing of a law. The law in and of itself is not enough. Without enforcement, there is little reason for people to obey the law. Military and others need to feel the cost of violating the law. There has to be a reason for them to obey the law.

I'm the happy winner of the Dutch award of 'Most valued lawyer of 2015'. It's a real honour, not only for me and my firm but also for our clients who are the reason of what we are doing.
